This is based on per capita per-day basis of the relative poverty line, which is half of the adjusted median household income, as monitored by the Central Statistics Office.
Mauritius does not have an official national poverty line. The Central Statistics Office keeps track of a relative poverty line (half of median household income), as well as extreme poverty using UN’s definition of USD 1.25 (PPP) a day. Household income and expenditure data is collected through the five-yearly Household Budget Survey (HBS).
7.9% of the households were below the relatively poverty line in 2006/07, slightly lower than the 8.7% in 1996/97. The average monthly household consumption expenditure for the poor is estimated at MUR 6,500 compared to MUR 14,300 for all households. Extreme poverty, i.e. proportion of population living below $1.25 (PPP) a day, was below 1 % in 2006/07.
Mauritius is an upper-middle income country as classified by the World Bank, which places it together with countries like China and Malaysia.
